Printing for the way Los Angeles does business.
Los Angeles is the most design-literate print market in the country, and the card you hand over on the Westside will be judged by people who judge for a living.
Los Angeles is entertainment, but it is also aerospace, apparel, logistics through the ports, a huge healthcare sector and more small businesses than any city in America. Business is spread across a hundred neighbourhoods, from studio lots in Burbank to the fashion district downtown to the agencies of Culver City and the Westside. Introductions are constant and the competition for attention is total.
LA print has to be specific. A card that says one thing well beats a card that says five. Finishes matter here; soft touch, spot UV and a painted edge are understood and appreciated. Postcards work for galleries, salons and restaurants; flyers still live on the boards at coffee shops in Silver Lake and Highland Park.
Where print earns its keep in Los Angeles.
Print works differently in different parts of a city. These are the places in Los Angeles where a printed piece tends to do the most work, and the piece that usually suits each one.
Culver City, Santa Monica and the Westside. Agencies, tech and entertainment offices. Cards with real design and a finish that gets noticed.
Downtown, the Arts District and the Fashion District. Studios, showrooms and wholesale. Sales sheets and rack cards for buyers, postcards for openings.
Silver Lake, Highland Park and Echo Park. Independent shops, salons and venues. Flyers and postcards that look like posters.
The Los Angeles Convention Center and the studio lots. Trade shows and productions. A retractable banner and cards for a crew that changes weekly.
One clear purpose. The right piece of paper.
What Los Angeles tends to order. Aerospace and advanced manufacturing companies clustered in the South Bay, from El Segundo toward Long Beach, qualify suppliers on a trifold brochure or sales sheet with real specifications long before anyone cares about a finish. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach support a huge customs and freight trade that runs on a plain, sturdy business card and a sales sheet rather than anything decorative. LA's independent wellness world, the yoga studios, trainers and beauty professionals in almost every neighbourhood, sells itself with a rack card and a launch postcard.
Put a readable name first, then one line about what you do, then the one contact route you want people to use. A finish should support that, never make it harder to read.
Compare business card finishes| The moment | What usually works |
|---|---|
| A trade show at the Convention Center | A retractable banner, booth cards and a sales sheet |
| A production office staffing a show | Business cards for a crew, one file |
| A gallery or salon opening on the east side | Postcards and flyers with the design front and centre |
| A showroom in the Fashion District | Rack cards and a sales sheet buyers take back |
Make the whole set feel like your business.
A Los Angeles note. In Los Angeles, restraint reads as confidence. One typeface, one colour, one finish. If you choose a finish, choose it deliberately: soft touch for luxury and services, spot UV for a logo that deserves it, a painted edge for a brand that wants to be remembered from the side of the stack.
A brand does not need every piece to look identical, only a consistent voice, a deliberate palette and type that works at several sizes. Bring your logo, or start from nothing: print product design is $97 and logo design is $250, set up for the product and finish you picked.
See what design costsPlan around the day you need it in hand.
Work backward from the day the materials have to be ready, and leave room for artwork, the proof, production and shipping. Each product page states its own time on press: two to three business days for most cards and postcards once you approve your proof, three to four for soft touch and door hangers, seven to twelve for the XL banner. Shipping sits on top of that. Give us the delivery address and your date when you order, with a receiving name if it is going to a venue, a hotel or a shared office. If the date is fixed, say so and we will tell you whether it is possible before you pay.
Getting print into Los Angeles. Los Angeles traffic is a function of time of day more than distance, and crossing the Sepulveda Pass or reaching the Westside at the wrong hour can turn a short trip into a long one, so build in room around rush periods. Studio lots generally require a drive-on pass or security check for any outside vendor delivery, so a shipment for a production office needs a contact who can clear it at the gate. The coastal marine layer keeps parts of the city cool and damp much of the year, and stock left in that damp air can soften faster than inland.
Mailing in Los Angeles. For postcards by route, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Larchmont and Culver City are walkable neighbourhoods where a designed mailer gets kept.
Give the file your full attention.
Use the artwork guide on the product you picked, because the finished size, the bleed and the safe area are not the same for every format. Upload a PDF, PNG or JPG and the size, bleed and resolution are checked in your browser, then your proof arrives by email and nothing goes to press until you approve it. Read your own details out loud when it lands: names, numbers, web addresses, dates, spelling and which side is which. If there is a QR code, scan it yourself.
